1 What is a Pikler Triangle?

The Pikler Triangle, also called the Pikler Climbing Triangle, is a wooden indoor climbing device with rungs in the shape of a triangle. Playing with the Pikler Tri angle promotes the age-appropriate development of the motor skills of young children between the ages of 8 months and 7 years. The name Pikler Triangle is derived from the name of the educator and inventor Emmi Pikler.

2. why is a Pikler Triangle useful for?

Playing with the Pikler Tri angle promotes the development of motor skills, sense of balance and musculature of young children. Remarkably, without the assistance of parents, based entirely on self-determined play, this promotion is achieved.

By using the Pikler Triangle as an imaginary toy and by providing a sense of achievement while climbing, playing with the Pikler Triangle also promotes creativity and self-confidence in young children.

3) How big should a Pikler Triangle be?

For home use, a Pikler Tri angle with a height between 70 and 90 cm is perfect. For safety reasons, a Pikler Tri angle should not be taller than this. If you choose a small Pikler tri angle (about 60 cm high), be prepared to buy twice. Small Pikler triangles are usually used by children only between the ages of 1 and 2, whereas children can play with a large Pikler tri angle between the ages of 1 and 7. The playtime of large Pikler tri angles is significantly longer and their purchase is therefore more worthwhile.

4) What material should a Pikler triangle be made of?

Pikler triangles should be made of untreated wood e.g. birch or beech. Here the rule is: "Multiplex is the better solid wood." Multiplex is simply much more stable than solid wood. It therefore prevents rungs from breaking off, which often happens more often with inexpensive Pikler triangles.

Pikler triangles made of pine wood or plastic should be avoided. They are usually not very robust and may contain harmful substances.

5) From what age can young children play with a Pikler triangle?

The Pikler Triangle is suitable for children between the ages of 8 months and 7 years. As children get older, the nature of play changes from purely physical play (climbing and sliding) to imaginative play. In the latter, the Pikler Triangle is used, for example, to form a tunnel or, in combination with a blanket, as a tent. The play time given here applies only to sturdy and well-designed Pikler Triangles.

6. how much does a Pikler Triangle cost?

Well designed Pikler Triangles with a slide with a height between 70-90cm cost between 300-500€.

7. which is the best Pikler triangle?

The best Pikler tri angle is the one that a toddler can play with regularly and for a long time without risk of injury.

Since many Pikler triangles are in constant use and the little rascals are not exactly squeamish with the Pikler triangle, longevity and robustness are the most important factors when buying Pikler tri angles.

8. what are the characteristics of a good Pikler triangle?

    • High-quality workmanship, edges should be rounded and the surfaces sanded - This prevents the risk of injury
    • The right height approx. 70 cm - 90 cm
    • Made of untreated wood (birch or beech, preferably multiplex for best possible robustness)
    • A rung distance of approx. 12.5 cm, for best possible safety
    • Foldable and therefore space-saving for easy storage at home or transportation
    • A foldable Pikler triangle should have folding locks to protect against unintentional folding during play
    • Robustness, stability and high quality workmanship ensure durability
    • Pikler triangles treated with chemical paints or varnishes should be avoided. These can contain harmful substances
    • Accessories such as slide and chicken ladder for additional play possibilities
    • Sufficient space between the legs of the Pikler triangle (large opening angle). This is more beneficial for fantasy play such as building dens or using it as a tent or crawling tunnel

9) Are cheap Pikler triangles recommended?

The problem with cheap Pikler tri angles type is usually the savings that the manufacturer has made to achieve the low price.

So cheap Pikler triangles are sometimes unsafe, because rungs have been saved and therefore the distance between the rungs is too large (danger of egg crushing for the child's head). If cheap materials such as pine wood are used and the rungs are glued and not screwed, this can lead to splintering or even to the rungs breaking off.

Some manufacturers also skimp on the finish of the Pikler Triangle. Often the surfaces are rough and splintery because they have not been properly sanded. Edges may not be sharp because they have not been rounded to save costs.

10. Where does the name Pikler Triangle come from?

The name of the Pikler Triangle comes from the Hungarian pediatrician, educator and inventor of the Pikler Triangle. She inspired already in the 1930s with revolutionary approaches to children's education.

11. What experiences do parents have with the Pikler Triangle?

Experiences are, of course, individual. Nevertheless, it can be said that the overwhelming majority of parents are enthusiastic about this play equipment. The children engage independently with the Pikler Triangle and are constantly inventing new ways to play.
